A six-week trial by a Wellington bus company of a device to reduce emissions on its diesel engines has shown a 10 per cent drop in fuel consumption.
Plans are in place to install three more units in the coming months.
Transdev, the operator of Mana Newlands Coach Services , began testing a new Australian fuel technology by HYDI Hydrogen on one of its existing diesel buses in May.
“We are very pleased with the fuel and anticipated emissions savings made to date,” Transdev managing director Greg Pollock said.
He said the company was working with HYDI to gain “optimal effectiveness”, while also conducting their own independent emissions testing.
“The early results from our Wellington fleet are fantastic and we are working with an independent company to validate the true emissions savings.”
The company had committed to reducing its carbon footprint by 30 per cent by 2030, with the goal of net zero by 2050.
